AID — If Chad Renfroe was still playing, his first game as a coach would have been a shutout.
Oh, wait. It was a shutout.
Jeremy Hatfield and Robbie Powell combined on a two-hitter as the Symmes Valley Vikings blanked the South Gallia Rebels 15-0 in five innings Tuesday to give Renfroe a win in his coaching debut.
“These kids are easy to coach. They worked really hard for me,” said Renfroe.
Hatfield gave up two hits in four innings and racked up 10 strikeouts for the win. Powell worked the fifth inning and had three strikeouts and a walk.
“Hatfield threw the ball real well and in the fourth inning we finally got the bats going,” said Renfroe
The Vikings got all the runs they needed in the first innings as they took a 2-0 lead on a single by J.J. Huff and Powell’s two-run homer.
The lead went to 4-0 in the third inning when Powell, Hatfield and Brice Sexton all singled.
Symmes Valley exploded for 11 runs in the fourth inning.
Cody Bland powered a two-run homer in the uprising as the Vikings collected nine hits. Luke Taylor added a two-run triple.
Powell went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in. Tyler Eastham and Sexton each went 3-4, Taylor 2-3 and Hatfield 2-4.
The Vikings play at Portsmouth Notre Dame Monday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
