Cold shooting dooms Lady Hornets

PEDRO — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets did all but one thing Saturday, but it was the most important.
Shooting just 36 percent from the field, Coal Grove was unable to generate enough offense to upend Oak Hill and the Lady Oaks came away with a 48-38 win in the Division III sectional finals.
“We played the kind of game we had to play to win. If we any scoring from the outside, we could have won,” said Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller. “And it wasn’t any one person. Everyone struggled.”
Among the Lady Hornets who struggled was leading scorer Jordyn Cox who had just one point as she suffered an 0-for-12 shooting effort.
“It’s been tough for Jordyn to get shots all year. Teams always focus on her and she has to create shots,” said Miller.
Coal Grove’s Abby Nance made a layup at the 6:55 mark to tie the game at 2-2 and Danielle Carpenter’s layup with 32 seconds left in the first quarter put the Lady Hornets up 9-8.
Those proved to be the only times in the game Coal Grove led or was tied.
Layups by Kaylin Marshall and Karissa Adkins gave the Oaks a 12-9 lead at the end of the quarter that they never relinquished.
Coal Grove (12-9) was down 15-13 midway through the second quarter on a put-back by Carpenter, but Oak Hill closed the half with an 8-2 run and led 29-24 at the break.
The Lady Oaks led 27-17 on a 10-footer by Adkins in the third quarter only to have Coal Grove close to within 29-24 at the end of the quarter after a layup by Coal Grove’ Chelsea Delong.
A 3-pointer by Delong with 1:33 to play cut the gap to 42-38, but Mikie Strite answered with a three-point play with 1:11 left to make it 45-38 and virtually seal the deal.
Carpenter had 14 points and nine rebounds, Delong nine points and Harrison seven rebounds.
Marshall scored 19 for Oak Hill (15-6).
