GALLIPOLIS — The Chesapeake Panthers treated it as a pickup game.
The Panthers picked up their defense and rallied from a big early deficit to beat the Gallipolis Blue Devils 54-50 in overtime Tuesday.
“We picked up our pressure a little bit. We started defending better and taking better shots,” said Panthers coach Ryan Davis.
Gallipolis (2-2) started the game by hitting its first four shots to lead 8-0 and went on to go up 20-4 at the end of the quarter.
The Panthers turned the tables on the Blue Devils with a 9-0 run to start the second quarter and held Gallipolis scoreless until the 4:30 mark. Chesapeake got within 30-25 at the half.
Gallipolis upped its lead to 10 to open the second only to have Chesapeake go on a 14-4 run and tie the game at 39-39.

A steal and 3-point play by David Rumley gave the Blue Devils a 49-47 lead. Shoemaker sank two free throws to tied the game with two seconds left and for the overtime.
