SCIOTOVILLE — The St. Joseph Flyers got in the Christmas spirit a little too early for coach Kevin Sheridan.

The Flyers gift wrapped their season opener with 24 turnovers in a 65-61 loss to the East Tartans.

“We just gave it away. In every sense of the word we gave it away,” said Sheridan.

“We had 24 turnovers and most of those were in the halfcourt game. We had a lot of unforced mistakes. Some of that was inexperience. We just didn’t understand how to play in certain situations.”

St. Joseph jumped out to an 8-0 lead to begin the game and the defense held East without a field goal in the first quarter to take a 14-6 lead.

Chad Harvey scored 11 points in the second quarter as the Flyers extended their lead to 33-22.

David Crossan came off the bench and scored five points in the third for the Flyers, but

East rallied to within 43-42.

“We started out playing well defensively, but then we just went flat for some reason in the third quarter. We were not focused mentally,” said Sheridan. “We couldn’t get a stop down the stretch when we needed.”

The game was tied with 20 seconds to play when East scored to take the lead. However, the Flyers committed another turnover and the Tartans scored to seal the win.

Harvey finished with 23 points to lead all scorers. Joey Basedow had 11 points and seven rebounds and Crossan added 10 points.

Caleb Blackburn had six rebounds, Payton Blair three assists and Alex Brown three steals.

Brad Collins led East with 15.
