The Ironton boys golf team defeated the Portsmouth Trojans 163 to 166 last week to avenge an earlier loss.

Nathan Kerns shot a 1-over par to led Ironton with a 37. Andy Holtzapfel shot a 40, Jonathan Williams had a 42, and Josh Cooke rounded out the top four scores with a 44.

“We played pretty well, but need to pick it up and get consistent if we hope to make a run through the tournament,” said Ironton coach Jeff Kerns.

On Wednesday, Ironton posted two more wins by shooting a 162 team score.

Ashland was next at 174 and Fairview, Ky., had a collective 228.

Nathan Kerns had a 1-over par 37 with Holtzapfel second just two shots off par.

Williams again shot a 42 and Cooke had a 45. Aaron Christian shot a 49, Filkins a 50.

In a match at the Ironton Country Club on Thursday, Ironton lost to both Elliott County, Ky., and the Chesapeake Panthers.

Elliott County had a 157 team score. Chesapeake shot a 162 while Ironton was at 165.

“We seemed out of sync, but that’s not an excuse,” said coach Kerns. “Elliott County has a good team and don’t take anything away from Chesapeake. They played really well.”

Nathan Kerns led Ironton with a 1-under par 34 to take medalist honors.

Holtzapfel shot a 41 while Mason Weisgarber and Cooke each carded a 45.

Chesapeake’s trio of Kyle Rase, Bryon Huff, and Brandon Scott each shot a 39. Nic Allen rounded out the scoring with a 45.

Ironton (34-26) plays at Portsmouth Tuesday.
