Redwomen shut down Rucker to get win over Chesapeake

PEDRO — This is one time Sarah Rucker wished she wasn’t the center of attention.

The Rock Hill defense made Rucker their main focus again as they held the high-scoring Chesapeake senior center to 10 points as the Redwomen posted a 48-42 win Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Rock Hill coach Matt Fulks rotated Anna Bridges, Kayla Skaggs and Elisha Daniels to double-team Rucker who was averaging 30 points a game. In the last six meetings, Rucker has never scored more than 12 points.

“We did another good job on Rucker. I can’t say enough for Kayla, Elisha and Anna,” said Fulks. “But our other girls played well, too. We had to play 3-on-4 and all of them did what they had to do.

“Amy Layne didn’t score a point but did a good job guarding. Samantha (Harris) and Brooke (Long) and Amy did a good job chasing their shooters. Bobbi (Harper) stepped up and shot the ball. She was on fire.”

Fulks was pleased with his team’s effort after losing 58-32 Monday at Fairland.

“We wanted to bounce back from Monday’s disappointment. We were ready to go and now we have to maintain that,” said Fulks.

Rock Hill (7-8, 4-3) was led by Harper with 22 points while Long scored 14.

Holly Black also scored 10 points for Chesapeake (8-6, 3-4).

Long and Harper combined for 9 points in the first quarter as Rock Hill took a 13-8 lead.

Rucker had 6 of her points in the second quarter as Chesapeake closed to within 19-18 at the half.

Harper exploded for 11 points in the third quarter as Rock Hill pulled away to a 36-28 lead.

Rachel Harris scored 6 points in the fourth quarter as Chesapeake cut the deficit to just 4 points, but Harper scored 7 points including 3 of 4 from the foul line to seal the win.

“They had some other girls do a good job, but we got a hand in their face and played hard. We knew they were going to hit a few shots from outside, but decided to take our chances with them rather than let Rucker shoot layups,” said Fulks.
