WILLOW WOOD — The running backs are beginning to gain yardage. All of them.

Symmes Valley had 10 different ballcarriers as the Vikings routed the Hannan (W.Va.) Wildcats Friday.

The Vikings (1-1) racked up 301 total yards including 52 carries for 200 yards on the ground.

“Our running game is getting better, but not where we want it. The kids are working at it,” Vikings coach Rusty Webb said.

Symmes Valley broke a scoreless tie on a 4-yard run by Cody Thompson with 8:39 left in the half.

Two plays after the kickoff, the Vikings recovered a fumble. Kirt Shipley caught a 15-yard scoring pass from Chris Capper and it was 12-0 just 33 seconds later.

Another short touchdown run by Thompson and Capper’s conversion run extended the lead to 20-0.

The Vikings got one more score as Capper teamed up with Shipley on a 58-yard scoring pass with no time on the clock and it was 26-0 at the half.

Capper, who was 4 of 8 passing for 101 yards, threw his second touchdown pass of the game in the third quarter as he click on a 12-yard throw to Kyle Meadows and it was 33-0.

“I thought our young kids played pretty well. We’re starting to gain confidence and our veteran players are working well with our younger kids,” Webb said.

Tyler Dickess scored on a 2-yard run with 5:44 to play to cap the Vikings’ scoring.

The Wildcats avoided the shutout on a 48-yard scoring run by Zach Sturgeon against the Vikings second unit with just 1:18 to play.

Hannan was limited to 120 yards rushing and none passing. The first team offense had less than 80 yards offense and only one first down.

“The defense played another outstanding game,” Webb said.

The Vikings travel to Chesapeake next Friday.
