COAL GROVE — Despite threatening weather in the area, Rocky Top officials persevered and had another exciting night of racing Friday.
Some of the best drivers in the region assembled in the pits to put on “the most exciting, action packed show in town” at Rocky Top.
In the Late Model A-Main, Jackie Boggs took the lead at the start with Nick Bocook right behind him. With Boggs and Bocook in front of the field, the battle for the third through sixth positions really started to heat up on a restart just past the halfway point.
Josh McGuire ran third for most of the night but got crossed up on the restart allowing fifth place runner Terry Hicks to blast through to the third position with now McGuire, Kevin Wagner, and Kenny Christy racing extremely hard behind the leaders for position.
However, nobody had anything for Boggs the entire night as he took the checkers to win his first race at Rocky Top this season.
Nick Bocook finished second with Hicks third, Wagner fourth and Christy fifth. Boggs was fast qualifier and won the dash while Josh Bocook and Christy won heat races.
In the AMRA Modified A-Main, Doug Adkins took the lead at the start as the full field of 20 raced on behind him. Adkins and Eddie Harmon had a great battle for the lead the first 10 laps as that battle got even tighter on a lap 11 restart.
On the restart, Adkins and Harmon made contact, nearly spinning both out and allowing third-place runner Darrin McDonald to pass both of them to take the lead.
Adkins and Harmon kept going, but on lap 15 Harmon put together a big charge to go side-by-side for the lead with McDonald.
Harmon and McDonald battled for the lead for the next three. With two laps to go, Harmon cleared McDonald to go on and take his second win of the season at Rocky Top.
McDonald finished second in his first race at Rocky Top with Adkins third, Rodney Keefer fourth, and Mark Dickson fifth. Adkins was fast qualifier and won the dash while Robert Garnes and Adam Jordan won heat races.
Wayne Hughes was dominant again in the Bomber A-Main to take his second win in a row and fourth on the season at Rocky Top. Mays finished second in his first trip to Rocky Top with David Dunn third, Brett Carey fourth and Kenneth Neal fifth.
Hughes and Tim Curnette won heat races. In the 4-cylinder/6-cylinder A-Main, Bryan Russell took his first Rocky Top win of the season with Keith Anderson second, Jim Harper third, Brandon Maynard fourth and Brian Secrist fifth.
This Friday will be the east coast’s top Open Wheel Modified series. The AMRA Road Warrior Tour will invade the track for a 30-lap feature event with $1,000 going to the winner.
Late Models will also be on hand running a regular, $1,200 to win show. General admission is $12 with pit admission $28.
