Two men accused of assaulting area law enforcement officers were among those entering guilty pleas Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court.
Shannon Lewis, 24, of 503 Lane St., Coal Grove, told Judge Frank McCown he was guilty of assaulting Coal Grove police officer Charles Wheeler in an incident in February.
McCown sentenced Lewis to six months in prison but noted this was Lewis’ second assault conviction in one year.
Also Wednesday, Dakota Johnson, 18, of 374 Township Road 103, Chesapeake, pleaded guilty to one count of assault against Chesapeake police officer Jason Newman and one count of fleeing and eluding that officer.
Johnson must successfully complete a rehabilitation program at a community-based correctional facility (CBCF) and serve the balance of four years on community controlled sanctions.
His attorney, Tyler Smith, said the treatment and probation were in his client’s best interests.
“My client is young and he has had some decision making that was not appropriate,” Smith told Judge Richard Walton. “He is 18 years old, he has a long future ahead of him and he should be put in the right direction with the CBCF.”
Also Wednesday, a Proctorville woman will spend a total of eight years in prison for her part in the hold up of an eastern end business earlier this year.
Nikki Lewis, 27, of 50 Township Road 1059, was sentenced Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court. Walton sentenced Lewis to four years in prison on the charge of complicity to aggravated robbery.
Because a gun was used in the crime, state law mandates an additional three-year sentence for that. Walton also ordered a one-year sentence for the charge of fleeing and eluding.
State law requires all three sentences to be served consecutively.
Lewis was found guilty after a one-day trial last month.
In arguing for a light sentence, her attorney, David Reid Dillon, said one of her codefendants received a light sentence for his part in the hold up of the Game Room.
“We submit to the court that her involvement was peripheral. She has no significant criminal history, a couple of shoplifting convictions and she is relatively young,” Dillon argued. “We believe a long prison term would not help her and would not safeguard the citizens of Lawrence County.”
But Assistant Lawrence County Prosecutor Mack Anderson argued that she knew what she was doing and even fled Ohio to avoid being caught by authorities after the crime. In the end, Walton sided with Anderson.
“Regardless of what other people received, she has shown no remorse. No matter what she has said her actions are different,” Walton said.
One of two cohorts, Thomas Allen, 21, of Huntington, W.Va., was sentenced to three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a robbery charge.
Like Lewis, he also received an three additional years in prison for the firearm specification. A third person, Johnny Belcher, 22, of 22022 State Route 243, Proctorville, remains at large. The robbery occurred April 5.
Also, an Ironton man pleaded guilty to a single count of attempt to commit grand theft. Derrick White, 19, of 607 German Hollow Road, was sentenced to four years probation and must testify against two co-defendants in the case. White apologized to McCown Wednesday for having been in his courtroom.
“I am sorry for the trouble I caused the court,” he said. “Thank you, your honor.”
“These fellows involved with you, were they friends of yours?” McCown asked.
“We went to school together,” White replied.
“But you will testify against them?” McCown queried.
“Yes,” White agreed.
They are accused of trying to steal a four-wheeler. The incident took place in March.
