Summer program fills void

CHESAPEAKE — During the summer, many children do not get the nutritious meals they need for their growth and overall well being, according to some school officials.

During the school year, the cafeterias serve hot, belly-filling breakfasts and lunches, but during the months of June, July and August, there is a void for some youngsters.

To help fill this gap, the Chesapeake School District is offering its summer food program at the middle school to all students in the district under the age of 18. It is also available to those over the age of 18 with disabilities who are enrolled in a school-administered program. There are no income requirements to come and eat.

The county receives federal funding for the program because of the high number of children receiving free or reduced lunch. Schools can apply to participate in the program, but only a few do so because of the need for personnel to prepare and serve the lunches.

“This really gives us the opportunity to keep the kids eating healthy,” said Freda Sisk, head cook and site supervisor at Chesapeake Middle School.

“It keeps it going throughout the year and that’s really important.”

Breakfast will be offered at Chesapeake from 8 to 9 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, through June 30. All meals must be eaten on the premises. Only children will be allowed to eat, no adults are allowed to receive meals.

The Rock Hill School District will also be participating in the food program from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, through June 22.
