FRANKLIN FURNACE — Leave it to the seniors.

Led by their seniors, the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings clinched at least a share of the Southern Ohio Conference championship with a 5-4 win over the Green Lady Bobcats.

“That’s a typical Green-Symmes Valley ball game,” Lady Vikings coach Jeff “Odie” Estep said.

“We were fortunate to get a couple of nice hits from our seniors. Green came to play, but our girls played well. They rose to the challenge,”

The Lady Vikings seniors Megan Coomes, Renee Campbell, Mandi Estep and Rebecca Capper have won the SOC title all four years off high school.

Symmes Valley is 20-3 overall and finishes 13-1 in the league.

Green took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a double by Perkins, a ground out and a base hit by Brittney Lute.

The Lady Vikings tied the game in the third inning when Mandi Estep singled and Emily Bowling doubled.

Symmes Valley took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning.

With two outs, Estep was safe on an error, Bowling hit into a fielder’s choice and Capper hit an inside-the-park home run down the right field line.

Green went in front 4-3 with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Jessica Dyer reached on an error, Ashley Phelps doubled and Abbey Barnett had a two-out triple. An error on the return throw from the outfield allowed Barnett to score.

Symmes Valley rallied with two runs in the seventh inning to take the lead for good.

Kayla Justice reached on an error to start the inning. Estep tripled Justice home with one out and Bowling hit a long sacrifice fly to score Estep.

The Lady Vikings play at 1 p.m. Saturday at home in the sectional finals.
