Redwomen, Panthers win Rock Hill meet

PEDRO —The word “I” would never be on an English exam if coach Mike Blagg was administering the test.

He prefers pronouns such as “we” and “us.” So does his Rock Hill Redwomen track team.

The Redwomen had four first-place finishes, five seconds and thirds, and three fourth-places Friday as they won their own invitational meet with 128 points, well ahead of runner-up Chesapeake with 71 points.

“We have a lot of kids out. We have a lot of girls who have done well for us. We’re not a team of individual stars. It’s definitely a group effort,” Blagg said.

In the boys meet, Chesapeake had 126 points to take the team title. South Point was second with 110 and Fairland had 100.

“It went pretty well, but it’s hard to get a read on what it means in terms of the conference meet. South Point didn’t have (shot put and discus thrower) Chris Smith,” Panthers coach Phil Davis said.

“It’s going to be a very competitive meet.”

The Ohio Valley Conference meet will be next Friday at Chesapeake.

The Redwomen got first place finishes from Anna Bridges in the long jump and Ashton Brammer in the 400 dash.

Also winning were the 4×200 relay team of Brittany Carmon, Michelle Pancake, Harmoni Schug and Brammer along with the 4×400 relay squad of Sarah Hartwig, Brittany Ross, Schug and Pancake.

“We threw some girls around to see what they could do and they did well. It surprised me,” Blagg said. “Brittany Ross did a nice job on the 4×800 relay.”

Chesapeake’s Hannah Pack won the 100-meter hurdles by one-tenth of a second over Carmon.

“Brittany went from 21 seconds at the beginning of the year to 17. She really works like crazy,” Blagg said.

Fairland’s Bethany Barbour won the shot put and the discus to join Pack as a double winner. Pack won both hurdle races.

South Point’s Ericka Leighty took the high jump and Laura Fields of Chesapeake won the 200 meter dash. South Point’s Megan Crabtree won the 100.

Ironton’s Valerie Sweeney was first in the 800 meter run with teammate Krista Markel winning the pole vault.

Fairland’s Chuckie Wentz was the only athlete with three individual titles as the distance runner won the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs.

Chesapeake’s Adam Slone won the 400 meter dash and Jeffrey Thornburg the 300 hurdles. The two joined Caleb McComas and Kenny Morgan to win the 4×400 relay.

South Point’s Benji Smith claimed first place in the 110 hurdles as he edged Thornburg.

Zach Norris in the pole vault and Quay Logan in the high jump gave South Point two more first place finishes.

Coal Grove’s Tyler Branch won the both the shot put and discus while Rock Hill’s Jason Massie grabbed two ribbons with first place finishes in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
