COAL GROVE — Cutting things in half was a whole lot better for the Coal Grove Hornets.
After losing Monday due to a half dozen errors, Coal Grove cut down on its errors and beat the River Valley Raiders 7-4 Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“We cut the errors in half and they came with two outs instead of no outs and then we were able bounce back and get the third out,” Hornets coach John Jones said.
“And (Bryan) Bryant pitched a pretty good game.”
Bryant pitched a three-hitter, striking out eight and walking one.
River Valley went up 1-0 in the first inning. T.R. Flint doubled, Ryan Eggleton was safe on an error and a passed ball scored the run.
Coal Grove went up 2-1 in the fourth inning.
Randy Wise singled, stole second base and went to third on a bad throw. He was awarded home on a fake tag.
Bryant then singled, stole second and came home when Zach Murphy reached on a fielder’s choice.
The Raiders tied the game with two outs in the to fifth inning when Eggleton was hit by a pitch and Higgenbothom doubled.
The Hornets took over the game with five runs in the bottom of the inning.
Andy Smith and Wise doubled to tie the game. Bryant singled to score Wise, then stole second and scored on a hit by Eric Davidson.
Davidson stole second and Branch had an RBI single. After Bryant stole second, Murphy had a run-scoring hit.
Coal Grove, 2-2 and 1-1, plays at Chesapeake Friday in an OVC game.
