AID — Forget sharp objects. Symmes Valley Vikings coach John Patterson knows something that hurts worse: errors.

Fielding mistakes plagued the Vikings for the third straight game as the Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans rallied for eight runs in the seventh inning to win 11-10 Monday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

“Errors really hurt us. Matt Owens pitched a good game, we just had several key errors,” Patterson said.

Symmes Valley went up 2-0 in the second inning.

Kyle Meadows hit a leadoff home run for the first run. Cody Bland walked, Owens put down a sacrifice bunt, Seth Saunders walked, the runners moved up on an error and Derek Carpenter put down a bunt that was thrown away at first base allowing the run to score.

The Titans scored three runs in the fifth to take the lead.

Symmes Valley had its own eight-run inning in the sixth to lead 10-3.

Alex Burnett walked, Meadows was safe on an error and Bland spanked a three-run homer.

Owens singled, Kirt Shipley was safe on an error and Seth Saunders reached on a dropped fly ball as both runners scored.

Carpenter was safe on an error and Brice Sexton had an RBI single.

But the Titans rallied with eight of their own in the seventh thanks to two walks, a hit batsman, two crucial errors and a three-run homer by Bob Herpy.

Symmes Valley, 9-10 and 8-9 in the SOC, plays at Portsmouth Clay Tuesday in a league game. The Vikings lost a doubleheader Saturday at Beaver Eastern in league play, 9-3 and 5-2.

Notre Dame is 13-5 and 9-1 in the league.
