There’s the 3-minute egg, the 5-minute shower and the 20-minute nap.

The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers have added the 6-minute scoring shutdown.

The Lady Tigers held the Portsmouth Lady Trojans scoreless over four different long stretches of time in a 55-33 win Thursday.

“We had three or four times we held them scoreless for about six minutes. If you do that, you’re chances of winning are going to be pretty good,” Ironton coach Amy Hughes said.

Mandi Boykin had 14 points, nine rebounds, two assists and six steals as Ironton stayed unbeaten in 11 games.

Danielle Henderson had 12 points and Jessica Waddle scored 11 points to go with three assists and seven steals. Sara Hacker pulled down 12 rebounds and Ciara Taylor had eight rebounds.

“Our girls really don’t care who scores. They’ll give up a layup to someone who has an open layup,” Hughes said.

Portsmouth (3-7) was led by Sydney Jordan with 18 points as she made 6 of 8 from 3-point range.

“We gave up the long shot to take away the shot inside. When you take something away, you have to give something up. They just happened to get hot from outside,” Hughes said.

Ironton

jumped out to a 10-0 lead by forcing 11 turnovers in the first quarter including five steals by Boykin.

Portsmouth finally made a foul shot at the 2:09 mark and another with 1:28 on the clock as Ironton led 12-2 at the end of the quarter.

A layup by Boykin put Ironton ahead 22-4. Portsmouth made its first field goal with 2:38 left in the half on a 3-pointer by Brya Coleman.

Jordan threw in a 35-footer at the buzzer to cut Ironton’s lead to 24-13 at the break.

Portsmouth got with 30-24 with 4:27 left in the third quarter on a three-point play by Jennifer Bendolph.

Layups by Waddle and Boykin extended Ironton’s lead to 40-27 only to have Jordan hit a 3-pointer with three seconds on the clock and it was 40-30.

But Portsmouth did not score in the fourth quarter until Jordan banked in a 3-pointer with 12 seconds to play.

“We learned something from the first time we played them. They’re the only team we played who has been able to match our speed,” Hughes said.

“We didn’t play them as tight and did a better job of rotating and giving help. We kept Jordan from getting the ball in the second half and she didn’t score in the fourth quarter until the last shot.”
