LLOYD, Ky. — Enough is enough.
Once again, Ironton was getting a strong pitching performance but found itself on the losing end. This time the Fighting Tigers weren’t going to be denied.
Ironton rallied for three runs in the seventh inning and beat the Greenup County Musketeers 4-2 Friday.
“I was thinking, ‘Here we go again.’ Chris Rakes had pitched a great game and we couldn’t get a clutch hit. But we got ourselves going in the seventh and really clutched up,” Ironton coach Mark Lewis said.
Ironton’s winning rally began with two outs.
Chris Rakes, who was the winning pitcher, singled and went to third base on a drag bunt single by Troy Allen. When Greenup first baseman James Madden tried to get Rakes going to third, the ball got loose and Rakes scored.
Dennis Gagai singled to center to drive in Allen, However, Greenup centerfielder Josh Jones let the ball go under his glove in his haste to make a throw to home plate and the ball rolled to the fence allowing Gagai to circle the bases.
Rakes got the win as he struck out three, walked one and gave up only one earned run.
“I felt better (than Monday’s start) and I threw better. My curveball was working,” Rakes said.
Greenup County (10-11) got an unearned run in the first inning when Boomer Pass reached second base on an error and scored on a hit by Bill Logan.
The lead went to 2-0 in the fifth. Pass singled, went to second base on a balk, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a hit by Derek Latimer.
Ironton (7-7) finally dented the scoreboard with a run in the sixth.
Gagai, who went 3-4, singled to start the inning. Dustin Preston doubled but Tanner Reed hit into a fielder’s choice as Gagai was thrown out at home.
However, T.J. Keith singled to center as Preston scored and it was 2-1.
Ironton hosts Rock Hill on Monday.
