PROCTORVLLE - Fairland Dragons coach Roger Snyder might have a hard time picking out his own rookie of the year.
Freshman Cole Hatfield pitched a four-hitter as the Dragons beat the River Valley Raiders 4-1 Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“That’s the fourth freshman we’ve put out there. Cole threw strikes and kept the ball down. He has a nice little curveball. He did a nice job tonight,” Snyder said.
Hatfield struck out seven and walked one in six innings. Robbie Easterling worked the seventh inning for the save.
Fairland went up 1-0 in the first inning when Nick Zundel doubled and scored on two passed balls.
The Dragons got three more runs in the fourth inning.
Adam Fuller singled, Easterling walked, both moved up on a passed ball and Fuller came home on a passed ball.
Adam Berry singled to score Easterling and Ethan Long doubled home the final run.
River Valley (0-13) got its only run in the fifth when Clayton Curnette singled, stole second base and came home on a hit by Ryan Eggleton.
Fairland, 8-4 and 4-4 in the OVC, will finish its suspended game Thursday against South Point at home.
