Chesapeake racked up 94 points, well ahead of runner-up Wheelersburg with 70 points. Host Fairland was third with 66 points followed by Huntington, W.Va., with 50, Rock Hill 28, Ironton 27 and South Gallia had seven.

“We had a really good, quickly ran meet and the kids performed very well in frigid weather,” Fairland coach Jon Buchanan said.

“Chesapeake returns a lot of athletes this year and it showed today. Wheelersburg is always tough because coach (Gary) Johnson does a great job with them. Huntington, like us, is very young but I’m very pleased with our effort and competitiveness.”

Chesapeake’s Brent Ransbottom, state runner-up in the high jump in Division III last season, cleared 6-foot-6. Teammate Jeffrey Thornburg leaped 19-5 in the long jump.

Fairland had three strong performance. Wes Ripley ran a 14.8 split in the shuttle hurdle relay and cleared 6-foot in the high jump. In the 4×800 relay, Eddie Adkins (2:15) and Bryan King (2:14) had good split times.

In the girls meet, Wheelersburg took first place with 7 points while the Rock Hill Redwomen were second, just six points behind.

Rock Hill took first place in three relays. Ashton Brammer, Amelia Zimmerman, Rachel Hartwig and Harmoni Schug won the 4×800, Michelle Pancake, Brittany Ross, Brammer and Schug took the 4×400, and Hartwig, Brammer, Zimmerman and Schug were first in the distance medley.

Huntington was third, Portsmouth fourth, Ironton fifth, Chesapeake sixth and Fairland was seventh.

Ironton girls coach Tim Thomas said his full team isn’t assemble with basketball season running long and injuries.

“We’ve only had some of the girls a few days and we’re still shaking the cob webs off. We got a good effort, though,” Thomas said.

Ironton hosts its girls invitational at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
