PORTSMOUTH — The battle of the boards was more of a skirmish for the Rock Hill Redmen.

Rock Hill outrebounded the Portsmouth Trojans 50 to 24 Saturday and came away with a 72-62 win.

“We blocked out better and offensively we had people who started crashing the boards instead of sitting back. Getting (offensive) boards led to getting free throws,” Redmen coach Marty Mills said.

Nathan Davenport, Andrew Stumbo and Mark DePriest had 10 rebounds each for the Redmen who had 20 offensive rebounds.

K.C. Christian scored 17 points, Matt Matney 16 and Davenport 11 to lead the Redmen (8-7).

“Our shot selection is better,” Mills said.

Charlie Doll had 17 points, Michael Valentine scored 15 and Antonio Johnson 13 for Portsmouth (4-12).

Mike Ison hit three 3-pointers and Nick Howard scored five points as the Redmen jumped out to a 10-0 lead and were up 20-16 at the end of the quarter.

After Portsmouth went on an 11-2 run to begin the second quarter and grab a 27-22 lead, Christian scored 10 points to get the Redmen within 35-33 at the break.

Matney and Davenport combined for 15 points in the third quarter as Rock Hill rallied to take a 54-47 lead.

Matney scored eight more points in the fourth quarter and the Redmen converted 10 of 15 shots from the foul line to prevent any Portsmouth comeback hopes.

“We’re starting to manage the game better. Our young kids are starting to understand how important those things are now. And one of the big things is we stayed composed. We didn’t get rattled,” Mills said.

The win marked Rock Hill’s first-ever win at Portsmouth and only the second career victory over the Trojans.
