COAL GROVE — Maybe the Coal Grove Lady Hornets weren’t sharp, but they still managed to cut up the Portsmouth Clay Lady Panthers for a win.

Scoring less than 50 points for only the second time this season, Coal Grove held off Clay 49-45 Saturday in a non-league game.

“We weren’t as sharp as we have been the last few games. Hopefully we’ll bounce back and play better Monday,” Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller said.

Coal Grove (7-2) hosts Fairland today in a battle for first place in the Ohio Valley Conference.

“It was good to get a win. Clay had beaten us the last three years,” Miller said.

Chelsea Markins scored 17 points and Samantha Hall 16 to lead the Lady Hornets.

Katie Duduit scored 13 points to lead Clay (8-4).

Hall scored seven points in the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 14-10 lead.

Markins had seven points in the second quarter as the Lady Hornets went in front 29-23 at the break.

The lead was 36-29 after three quarters and Coal Grove built a 12-point cushion with 1:20 to play. Clay rallied to within four points but could get no closer.

“We had chances in the first half and the second half to put them away and we didn’t do it,” Miller said.
