Lady Fighting Tigers tune up for Oak Hill with easy win

SOUTH POINT — Instead of looking ahead, the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers looked the South Point Lady Pointers straight in the eye.

With traditional powerhouse Oak Hill coming to play the Lady Tigers Wednesday, Ironton coach Amy Hughes were worried her team might be looking ahead to the showdown.

But the Lady Tigers put her fears to rest with a 60-19 win over the Lady Pointers Monday.

“You can’t pretend that the Oak Hill game isn’t a big game or that you can keep the players from thinking about it, but you have to make sure they take care of the matters at hand,” Hughes said.

“Defensively, we did that. Any time you hold a team to single-digit scoring, you’ve got to be pleased. And we did a nice job on the boads. But we need to be more selective with our shot selection.”

Ironton dominated the boards 38-12. Mandi

Boykin had 10 rebounds while Ciara Taylor grabbed six and Sara Hacker five.

On the offensive end, Danielle Henderson led the way with 16 points including 14 in the first half. Hacker finished with 15 points and Boykin chipped in 11.

The Ironton defense held South Point to just 7-for-38 shooting from the field for 18.4 percent.

Henderson and Hacker combined for 11 points in the first quarter as Ironton took a 19-6 lead.

After South Point got within 10-6 on an 8-footer by Jessica Craft, the Lady Fighting Tigers went on a 22-0 run and led 32-6 lead with 4:22 left in the half.

Ironton was up 40-11 at the half and a foul shot by Boykin put Ironton ahead 44-11 early in the third quarter.

Ironton is now 6-0 on the season and will take on the 5-1 Lady Oaks at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Oak Hill, which lost to Southern Ohio Conference favorite Northwest 71-66 in overtime on Monday, reached the state tournament two years ago and went 20-0 last season while winning the Associated Press poll championship.

The two teams haven’t played in six seasons.
