FRANKLIN FURANCE — How many movies or TV shows does the hero look doomed only to find a way to beat the bad guys?
The Green Bobcats wrote their own happy ending Friday against the Eastern Eagles as they rallied in the final seconds for a 68-66 Southern Ohio Conference win.
Trailing by five
points with less than two minutes to play, Green battled back to tie the game and then the trio of Derek Lewis, Nathan Patten and Brian Ramey went to work on the script.
Eastern’s leading scorer Zac Alexander was doubled teamed by Lewis and Patten and forced a pass toward another teammate. But knowing what to expect, Ramey intercepted the pass with about 10 seconds to play.
Ramey drove for the winning score but was fouled with no time on the clock. Ramey made both foul shots to give Green the win.
“Our defense put us in position to win,” Green coach Kevin Lewis said.
“It would have been easy for us to tuck our tails and go home lose 10-point lead and get behind by five. We played with the lead the majority of the game. A lot of times teams will fold, but our kids tied the game and then they executed what we wanted to do and Brian stepped up an made two big shots.”
Green was up 11-5 after the first quarter. Ramey scored 12 points and Lewis seven as Green took a 33-26 lead at the half. Alexander scored 11 points to keep Eastern close.
John Dawson had seven points in the third quarter to offset six by Adam Bond as Green went up 50-40 after three quarters.
Then came Green turnovers that led to a 21-8 run triggered by Alexander’s seven points that put Eastern ahead.
“We turned the ball over and they got points off our turnovers. We just had too many turnovers,” coach Lewis said.
Dawson scored six more points while Ramey , Patten and Lewis scored four each as the Bobcats came back to draw even.
Ramey led Green with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Lewis had 17 points, six rebounds and six assists. Dawson added 14 points and six rebounds while Patten scored 13.
Alexander had 21 points for Eastern (3-1, 1-1). Leading scorer Eric Gullett was limited to five points, all in the second.
