GALLIPOLIS — Someone take the lid off.

The basket must have seemed to have a lid on it for Rock Hill as the Redwomen couldn’t overcome their cold-shooting in a 56-48 loss Monday to the Gallipolis Blue Angels.

In a game that saw Rock Hill battle back to take a lead in the fourth quarter, the Redwomen shot just 16 of 70 from the field.

“Some of our shots were good looks, they just didn’t go in the basket,” Rock Hill coach Matt Fulks said. “We did like we always do. We fell behind and had to battle back. But we gave ourselves a chance to win and that’s all we’re asking of them.”

Mandi McKenzie scored 12 points and Brooke Long and Michelle Pancake 11 points each for for Rock Hill (2-3). Jackie Wamsley scored 25 points for Gallipolis (3-2).

Gallipolis took a 16-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. Pancake and McKenzie had four points each and Bobbi Harper and Long three apiece for the Redwomen.

McKenzie scored four points in the second quarter but Gallipolis pulled away to a 31-24 lead.

The Blue Angels were up 41-32 after three quarters. Long then scored six points and Pancake five as Rock Hill took the lead.

But the cold shooting allowed Gallipolis to take a three-point lead with 1:50 to play. Rock Hill was forced to foul and Gallipolis was able to use free throws to pull away to the win.

“We got back in it and had our opportunities, but we couldn’t convert our shots. Brooke stepped up and had a good game, and Kelsey Harris played a real good defensive game,” Fulks said. “We handled their pressure early and stayed in the game. We’re taking our steps. We’re getting there.”
