Fighting Tigers burn error-plagued Bulldogs

When you play with fire, chances are you'll get burn.
The Lawrence County (Ky.) Bulldogs use a spread offense, much like other teams. The biggest drawback with the offense is the high risk of a turnover.
The Ironton Fighting Tigers made the Bulldogs pay for their risky business as they forced eight turnovers and burned Lawrence County 37-0 Friday at Tanks Memorial Stadium.
Eric Layne, Chad Miller and Bruce Roach all had interceptions while Andy Colegrove recovered two fumbles and Dominic Murphy, T.J. Keith and Josh Walker one each.
"The spread offense is prone to fumbles and interceptions. A good team will take advantage of those kinds of mistakes and we'd like to think we're a good team," Ironton coach Bob Lutz said.
Nose guard Todd Eaches played havoc with the Bulldogs offense as he chased down quarterbacks Cory Humphrey and Justin Spradlin all night, forcing fumbles and helping on several sacks.
"I just tried to find a hole and get some pressure on the quarterback," Eaches said. "The defense played really well. We wanted to get after them and cause some turnovers."
Ironton (5-1) was without leading rusher Darius Lewis due to what Lutz termed "an in-house" reason, but junior Dominic Murphy filled in with 123 yards on 11 carries including a 75-yard burst at the end of the first half that led to a 3-yard touchdown pass from Chad Miller to Brandon Walker.
The touchdown came after a fumble recovery by Colegrove at the 7-yard line and extended Ironton's lead to 20-0 at the half.
"We weren't sure if we wanted to run out the clock or take a shot at it. I guess we made the right choice," Lutz said of Murphy's long run. "Dominic's a good athlete with great speed, but he doesn't move the pile or break tackles like Lewis."
Layne took over a different role in the offense. Usually a punishing lead blocker for his running mates, Layne carried 15 times for 84 yards and scored two touchdowns. Ironton had 281 rushing yards and 302 total yards.
"It was nice to get some carries along with having to block. It was fun," Layne said. "But I'll do whatever they want me to do as long as we win. That's the bottom line."
Murphy's fumble recovery at the 34 on the Bulldogs first series of the game led to a 29-yard field goal by Craig Stamper.
Layne's interception on the first play of the second quarter gave Ironton the ball at the 16-yard line. Three plays later Jarod Murphy scored on a 1-yard run and it was 10-0.
Behind some nice blocking by John McClellan, Ironton drove 57 yards in 11 plays on its next possession with Layne racing the final 11 yards to make it 16-0.
The Fighting Tigers then got their last-second touchdown after a fumble recovery by Colegrove with 47 seconds left in the half.
Lawrence County (2-4) recovered an onside kickoff to start the second half, but Eaches forced a fumble and Colegrove recovered at the Ironton 45 on the second play.
Seven plays later Layne scored from 3 yards out and it was 30-0.
Ironton's backups finished the final seven minutes of the game and tacked on the final touchdown, a 16-yard scamper by quarterback Drew Kuehne with 4:26 left.
