GRAYSON, Ky. - The Ironton Fighting Tigers went through the long and short of it.
Ironton had a solid game with its irons but struggled with its putting game. Still, it was enough to beat host Elliott County and Ashland in a triangular match.
"We hit the ball well. We put a lot of shots in the fairways and on the greens," Ironton coach Jeff Kerns said. "Our trouble was putting. It was a new course to us and we weren't used to the greens.
"But we need to play courses like that. It was a good experience. We played better in some areas and we still need work in other areas. It'll come."
Ironton shot a 166 as a team with Elliott County at 169. Ashland finished the nine holes with a 180 total.
Dennis Gagai claimed medalist honors for the second straight match as he shot a 3-over par 39.
"Dennis played well again. He's been really consistent so far. He's stepped his game up," Kerns said.
Seth Christian and Nathan Kerns were next as each carded a 42. Gavin Harbolt was one stroke back at 43 and Jay Rudmann shot a 44. Drew Sanders followed with a 56.
Evan Faulkner of Elliott County shot a 39 to share medalist honors. Jared Flanery and Ethan Faulkner each had a 43 and Brandon Adkins a 44 to comprise the Elliott County scores.
Gray Hunter shot a 40 to lead Ashland. Rece Martin and Jeb Jariell both had a 46 and Corey Stratton a 47.
Ironton plays at Shawnee Golf Course Monday in a match hosted by Portsmouth Clay.
