Scholarship started for loved one

Four friends and one son of Lyndall Cox Rapp have created a way to keep her memory alive, through a scholarship.

Evelyn Weill, Mary Roberts, June and Bill Washburn and Dan Rapp have worked with Ohio University Southern Campus to organize a scholarship fund in honor of their late friend and Rapp's mother.

"She was loving, plus she was always willing to help someone," said June Washburn, who had known Rapp for nearly 60 years. "All my children had her in school and they all loved her. And you don't always like your teachers."

"She was sympathetic," Weill said. "She could always see two sides of a story and she wasn't judgmental."

Rapp was very involved in the community, volunteering at the Lawrence County Historical Museum and First United Methodist Church in Ironton, and liked to play golf and bridge.

What the memorial is really based on, in addition to her character, is Rapp's educational history.

"She was a non-traditional student at Ohio University Southern who received her education degree after raising a family of five children and who was particularly interested in education," Weill said.

Rapp received her bachelors degree in English education in 1967 when she was 40 years old.

Her educational experience set the limits of who can receive the scholarship. It is intended for non-traditional female students in their junior or senior years at Ohio University Southern who are studying education.

Weill said it is aimed more at students who are trying to make it on their own.

"The scholarship fund is ongoing, so if anyone wants to contribute we'd be happy to take it," Weill said.

Contributions can be made to the Ohio University Foundation and sent to Bob Smith at the university.

Checks should include "Lyndall Cox Rapp Scholarship" for the memo.

"We feel it would be a fitting memorial for Lynn, because she loved education and she was a great giver," Weill said.
