COAL GROVE - The Rock Hill Redmen got what they needed and in the process got a win.

Rock Hill got some timely hits to back the pitching of Nathan Wagner in a 5-1 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Coal Grove Hornets Wednesday.

Wagner gave up four hits, struck out 13 and did not walk a batter as the Redmen improved to 2-1 and 1-1 in the OVC.

"Nathan threw a heck of a ball game and we finally got the hits when we needed them. It was a good win. Coal Grove has a nice ball club," Redmen coach Barry Litteral said.

Coal Grove's Nick Bazell allowed seven hits, fanned seven and walked five.

Rock Hill went up with a run in the top of the first inning.

T.J. Blagg walked, stole second, and came home when Matt Wilson was safe on error.

Coal Grove (0-2, 0-1) got its run in the bottom of the inning when Bryan Bryant reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a ground out and came home on a passed ball.

"It was a good game except our hitting was atrocious. We just need get some at bats," Hornets coach John Jones said.

The game remained 1-1 until the fifth inning when Rock Hill scored four times.

Justin Lavender singled, Wilson walked and Josh Moore beat out an infield hit to load the bases. Wagner walked to force home Lavender and, after a strikeout, Mike Williams doubled to clear the bases.

"Williams hits the ball well the other way," Litteral said.

"Both kids pitched well. Bazell just got the ball up and away and they had a left-handed batter who just drove it the other way," Jones said.

Williams was the only player with multiple hits as he went 2-for-4.

On Friday, Coal Grove hosts River Valley while Rock Hill entertains Chesapeake.
