Proctorville - Two Relay for Life teams from Fairland East Elementary are joining forces
to raise money and awareness in the fight against cancer.
Nate's Mates and the Crazy Crabs will be at the new Proctorville Dairy Queen on Thursday evening at 7, making and selling Relay for Life ice cream cakes.
May 6 and 7 will be the third relay for both teams and fund-raising together is not something new.
Crazy Crab's team captain Barbara Riley said her team's motto is "walking for a good claws."
The team raised $2,500 for last year's relay.
Nate's Mates team captain is Carolyn Waggoner.
Their motto is "let hope take flight." Nate's Mates raised $6,000 last year. Both Riley and Waggoner are close friends who participate in the Relay for Life as a way of remembering Waggoner's son, Nathan, who died of bone cancer in 2003.
"We are so emotionally involved, this is something we can still do" Waggoner said.
Dairy Queen Manager, Jeff Jones has invited the teams to make and sell the special purple and white Relay for Life cakes which they will sell for $13.99.
One half of the proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society in honor of Nathan. The teams' goal is $500.
Although the Relay for Life is only a short while away, the teams are still planning several more fund-raisers.
They plan on having a booth at the Fairland West Fun Fair, a possible rummage sale, and an on-site fund-raiser to name a few. "Our school system is really involved in this" Riley said.
If you would like more information regarding this Relay for Life team fund-raiser, please contact Carolyn Waggoner or Barbara Riley at 886-3120.
Other teams are also hard at work on a variety of events.
The Youth Opportunity Program will sponsor the WDRC Sports Explosion Day on Thursday. They are asking everyone planning to attend to wear your favorite team shirt or hat.
Games, food and fun will be featured. All proceeds will benefit Josh’s Jokers Relay for Life Team.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the WDRC.
Greasy Ridge Church of Christ will be delivering dinners at a cost of $5 on Tuesday.
