COAL GROVE - Getting even got the Coal Grove Hornets even.

Coal Grove avenged an earlier loss to Wayne by beating the Pioneers 59-56 Saturday night and in the process evened their record at 10-10

"We played better than the first time," Hornets coach Darrell Humphreys said.

It was the second straight year the Hornets have gone 10-10. They were tied for second in the OVC with a second place finish.

Justin Hyland did a better job for the Hornets with 21 points including 11 of 14 from the foul line. Randy Wise scored 14 points, Evan Melvin added 9 points, Adam Bare grabbed 9 rebounds and Hyland and Jim Lemon grabbed 6 rebounds each.

Nick Newell scored 26 points for Wayne, but none in the fourth quarter.

"Hyland and Melvin split time in the fourth quarter and they shutout Newell," Humphreys said.

After taking a 10-8 lead in the first quarter, Hyland had 8 points including four foul shots in the second quarter and Melvin added 7 points as Coal Grove took a 27-23 halftime lead.

Newell scored 11 points in the third quarter as Wayne stormed back to lead 43-39 at the half. Wise had 6 points to keep the Hornets close.

The Hornets converted 9 of 14 from the foul line in the fourth quarter with Hyland and Wise going 2 for 4. Hyland four free throws second and third quarters.

"We made our foul shots and that was a key," Humphreys said.

Coal Grove plays Portsmouth Monday at 6:15 p.m. at Jackson in the Div. III sectional semifinals.

"Lemon and Sexton have been with us for four years and Huber for three, so it was a nice game for them to go out on," Humphreys said.
