Chesapeake wins own wrestling invitational

NITRO - The Chesapeake Panthers may not have been very hospitable, but they weren't about to apologize.

Chesapeake had seven wrestlers among the first two places including five champions as they won their own Panther Invitational Duel Tournament.

Chesapeake had a 5-0 record with Fairland second at 4-1. George Washington was next at 3-2, followed by Wellston at 2-3. Hurricane and Spring Valley were each 1-4.

"We still had a couple of guys out, but the kids wrestled well under the format," Panthers coach Phil Davis said.

"I think we've improved. Some guys didn't finish as high, but the competition might have been tougher. Overall, everyone contributed."

Taking first place for the Panthers were Thomas Lewis at 112 pounds, John Warner at 145, Tim Wentz 160, Brad Eldred 171 and Bryan Eldred at 189.

Placing second were Jarrod Ellis at 103, Tyler Cravens at 119 and Lonnie McDonald at 135.

Fairland had three champions including Chuck Wentz at 103, Camron Clark at 130 and Tim Layne at 152.

The Dragons' second place finishers were Dave Goodall at 112,Justin Hayes at 125, Jeremy Thomas at 160 and Daniel Cardwell in the 215 class.

Chesapeake and Fairland will wrestle this weekend in the WSAZ-TV 3 Tournament.
