ATHENS - It was time to take care of business, and that meant taking care of the basketball.

The South Point Pointers had just 11 turnovers and got a 28-point performance from Chase McWhorter to rally past the Alexander Spartans 55-52 Saturday at the McDonald's Shootout at the Ohio University Convocation Center.

"With the exception of the drought in the third quarter, we played pretty well," Pointers coach Gary Norris said. "We played a little smarter than we have been, we were more patient on offense, and we took care of the ball better."

McWhorter, a sophomore, hit six 3-pointers as he racked up a career-high scoring night. J.T. Terry added 9 points and Jeremiah Taylor pulled down nine rebounds.

Alexander center Jake Hale had 23 points, but only 6 in the second half.

Hale scored 17 points in the first half as Alexander took a 30-22 halftime lead. The Pointers scored just 5 points in the second quarter after taking a 17-13 lead in the first quarter.

Norris said the team's youth and inexperience has been a cause for inconsistency.

"We don't have any experience. I've never had a team this young," Norris said. "We've had some bad quarters a couple of times and that has punished us."

McWhorter hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 points in the third quarter as South Point pulled within 41-39.

In the fourth quarter, McWhorter had 8 points including another pair of 3-pointers as the Pointers outscored the Spartans 16-11 to rally for their third win in 10 games.

Alexander fell to 6-3.
