WAYNE, W.Va. - Opportunity knocked Tuesday, but the Coal Grove Hornets refused to answer the door.

The Hornets failed to capitalize on their scoring chances as they lost 57-50 to the Wayne Pioneers.

"We had opportunity after opportunity and we just didn't make things happen," Hornets coach Darrell Humphreys said.

"We didn't turn the ball over much, but we didn't make our free throws. Turnovers and free throws are two things you have to do well and we only did one."

The loss wasted a 24-point performance by Randy Wise that included four 3-pointers and left the Hornets 4-3 on the season.

Wayne (3-0) was led by Brenick Stumbo with 16 points while Nick Newell and Garrett Rakes scored 10 each.

The Pioneers took a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter as Rakes had 4 points. Wise hit a 3-pointer for the Hornets.

In the second quarter, Wise scored 9 points including a pair of 3-pointers and Coal Grove trailed just 23-20 at the break.

Wise hit another trey and scored 9 points in the third quarter as Coal Grove climbed to within 33-31. Wise and Jim Lemon both made three foul shots in the third quarter comeback.

But Stumbo sank 7 of 8 at the foul line and also scored 9 points in the fourth quarter as Wayne held on for the win.
