PORTSMOUTH - Take the lid off.

The Green Lady Bobcats must have felt that there was a lid on the basket as they struggled with their shooting in a 42-31 loss to the Portsmouth Clay Lady Panthers Thursday in a key Southern Ohio Conference game.

"We were getting the shots and a lot of them were layups, but they just weren't falling," Green coach Melissa Knapp said.

Leigh Ann Williams had 8 points to lead Green, 1-1 overall and in the SOC.

Katie Duduit scored 14 points and Cameron Donini had 12 points to lead Clay, 3-0 and 2-0 in the league.

Despite the loss, Knapp saw a silver lining.

"We gave up 14 points to Duduit and 12 to Donini, but I thought we still played good defense. That was a good team we held to 42 points. The problem was we only scored 31 points," Knapp said.

Courtney McGowan and Duduit had 4 points each in the first quarter to offset 4 points by Kortney Pfleger as Clay went up 14-12.

Both offenses struggled in the second quarter as Clay outscored Green 5-2 and led 19-14 at the break.

Duduit, McGowan and Donini scored 3 points each in the third quarter to extend the lead to 31-20. Williams had 4 points in the quarter.

Each team scored 11 points in the fourth quarter. Donini had 6 points for Clay and Elista Hall got 5 for Green.

The Lady Bobcats plays at 4 p.m. Saturday at West Union.
