SOUTH POINT - Pick a style, any style, and watch the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers adjust.
The Lady Tigers adjusted to the physical play of the South Point Lady Pointers Monday and came away with a 73-46 win.
"It was a physical game, but it was a fun game," Ironton coach Amy Hughes said. "We need to play a game like that. We're going to see some teams who play physical and we have to be able to adjust to the different styles."
The two teams combined to shoot 56 free throws. Ironton converted 16 of 26 while South Point was a dismal 5 of 30.
"We hit our free throws and they didn't, but the biggest difference was on the boards," Hughes said.
Ironton dominated the glass with 47 rebounds to 21 for South Point.
Mandi Boykin had a strong all-around game with 21 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Andrea Rudmann scored 16 points and had three assists while Danielle Henderson scored a career-high 15 points, had seven rebounds and three assists.
Sara Hacker had a game-high 14 rebounds and Sarah Cartmell grabbed six rebounds for Ironton, now 2-0.
Jessi Craft had 13 points and Alisha Bridges 11 to pace the Lady Pointers (1-1).
Ironton jumped out to a 21-8 lead on a layup by Rudmann before Latisha Koukos and Amy Frasure made layups and it was 21-12.
The lead grew to 27-12 when Henderson hit a pair of shots and Boykin sank a free throw. South Point cut the deficit to 28-21 on a layup by Elisha Joyce with 3:22 to go in the half, but Ironton closed the half with a 10-4 run including the final two baskets by Boykin.
The Lady Tigers defense limited South Point to 3 for 11 shooting in the third quarter and extended their lead to 55-32 after three quarters.
Ashley Moritz followed up her own shot with 2:32 left in the game to give Ironton its biggest lead at 71-41.
In the reserve game, South Point won 36-30 as Missy Wheeler scored 8 points and Vanessa Rogers and Chelsea Damron 7 each. Kayla Wileman had 13 points and Sami Morgan 8 to pace Ironton.
