Nothing has changed for Ironton, but there's a new kid on the block.
While the Ironton Fighting Tigers remained No. 2 in this week's Associated Press Division IV football poll, the Symmes Valley Vikings climbed into the poll in Division VI.
The Vikings had 18 points to tie Richmond Heights for 13th place in the small school division. Symmes Valley, 7-1, has clinched a playoff berth and needs a win over Guyan Valley, W.Va., to clinch a home game in the first round.
In Div. IV, top-ranked Coldwater had 21 first place votes and 327 points. Ironton had 295 points and seven first place votes.
Ironton, 9-0, faces a formidable opponent Friday with a visit to Columbus DeSales, a Div. III power. An Ironton win should not only impress the voters, but a loss by top-ranked Coldwater to Delphos St. John could give the Fighting Tigers their fifth AP poll title.
The Fighting Tigers have won poll championships in 1986, 1988, 1993 and 2001.
