The 61-year-old Kerrey was a decorated Vietnam veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy SEAL unit. Wounded in Vietnam, Kerrey's bravery during the war earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Kerrey recently served on the Commission on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States, more commonly known as the 9-11 Commission.

Local Democratic candidates expected to speak at the rally include: county commissioner candidates, Mark Malone and George Patterson; clerk of courts Bob Blankenship; sheriff's candidate Russell E. Bennett Jr.; county recorder candidate David Classing; county treasurer candidate Stephen Dale Burcham; and state representative candidate Philip Roberts.
