FRANKLIN FURNACE - A new look brought a new beginning.
First-year head coach Kevin Sheridan installed a new system this season, and the Green Bobcats used it to open the season with a 39-7 rout of the Racine Southern Tornadoes Friday in the season opener for both teams.
"On one hand, it's good for your confidence when go into a new situation and you can win," Sheridan said. "But we're still unfamiliar with some things, so we can't relax. We have to keep working and getting better."
Josh Moore led the Bobcats with 182 yards rushing on just nine carries. He scored three touchdowns, one coming on an interception return. Moore had two interceptions for the game.
"Josh Moore did a little bit of everything. He made a nice interception that turned the game," Sheridan said.
Green took its first possession and marched down the field for a touchdown. Quarterback Derek Lewis scored on a 3-yard keeper and Mark Castro's conversion kick made it 7-0.
Moore then came up with his interception return for 50 yards on Southern's next possession and the lead was 13-0.
C.J. Blevins got into the act with a 47-yard punt return for a touchdown and the lead was 19-0 at the half.
The Bobcats blew the game wide open in the third quarter behind Moore who had a 51-yard scoring scamper and a 3-yard run. Moore also caught a conversion pass from Lewis that extended the lead to 33-0.
Castro bulled his way into the end zone from 2 yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter to push the lead to 39-0.
Sheridan said there were plenty of bright spots.
"Andy Avery isn't a stat guy, but he did a good job on both sides of the ball. Derek (Lewis) did a good job for his first game as a varsity quarterback," Sheridan said. "Kyle Bailey did a nice job blocking at left tackle. For the most part, the offensive line did a good job."
The Bobcats finished with 350 yards, all on the ground. Castro added 85 yards on 16 carries.
