COAL GROVE - It was a record breaking night on Friday the 13th at Rocky Top Raceway as track records were flying left and right to make for a very interesting qualifying session.

In late model time trials, Kenny Christy out of Vanceburg, Ky., would get the fast time award with a lap time of 13.858 at 97.416 mph. That would be a new track record and would put RTR tied with K-C Raceway as the fastest track in the area.

Christy was on the pole for the first heat race and would run away with the win leading all eight laps.

Last week's winner Nick Bocook was second with Terry Hicks in third. In the second heat race, Tom Hall, who crashed hard during his qualifying lap, fixed his car and won the second heat race with Kevin Wagner second and Randy Boggs third. The field would be set for the 20-lap A-main.

In the A-main, Christy started a rapid pace early and proved untouchable in the early laps. At one point in the race he had a straightaway lead over Josh Bocook. Christy swerved through the lap traffic on lap nine and showed everyone what a perfectly set up car looks like.

Then on lap 12, the first caution came out as Hall, running in the top five, would spin in turns three and four.

On the restart, Josh Bocook was right on the tail of Christy's car and went into three and four and got a nose under him. Bocook would do that for the next couple of laps, but he didn't have enough as Christy got his second feature win at Rocky Top. Josh Bocook was second for the second straight week. The best battle through the race was for third as Hicks edged Kevin Wagner.

In the modifieds, multiple cars broke track records with Grayson, Ky., driver Boggs getting the quick time award with a time of 15.280 at 88.351 mph for a new track record.

Because of the inverting of the field, Boggs started in the fourth and final position of the fast dash. That didn't matter to Boggs as he won the fast dash with Tim Moore in second, Duayne Pick third and Shawn Holliday fourth.

In the first heat race, Todd Robinson was on the pole and led every lap to win the heat race. The action in the first heat race was watching Greg Thompson use the high side coming from the back of the pack all the way to the front. Thompson got second in the heat race with Jeff Meadows third.

In the second heat race, Racin' Jason Perry won with Eric Hatfield second. That would set the field for the 20-lap, $800 to win A-Main.

In the modified A-main, Boggs got the lead as fifth place starter Robinson came all the way up to second. Boggs had a decent size lead as the caution flew for the first time on lap four for a spin.

On the restart, Boggs retained his lead as second place starter Tim Moore pulled off the track with problems on lap six.

On the restart,

Perry spun while he was running in the top five. Then on the restart, another contender, Tony Sites, spun on lap seven and pulled off the track with problems.

The race finally restarted with Boggs keeping the lead. Then, while running up high, Robinson hit the wall and was out of the race.

With contenders falling left and right, Pick hit a rut while 3-wheeling in turns one and two and his car went up in the air. He was over on his side but still going at top speed. Amazingly, he kept the car from flipping and went back down on all four wheels.

On the restart, Scott Linville's car caught fire forcing him to stop on the back straight and the fire crews to put the fire out. Linville escaped from his car uninjured.

On the restart, Boggs led the final 10 laps uncontested and won his second feature at Rocky Top. Adam Colley was second, Pick third, Hatfield fourth and Perry fifth.

In the limited late models, Scott Vaughn was leading but his car blew up with three laps to go and was done for the night. Steve Dillow took the lead and won the first heat race with Roy Cooper second.

In the second heat race, John Melvin, who started in the back, went three wide on the first turn and came out of the turn to take the lead. Melvin won the heat race with Evan Terry second and Jeff Whitley third.

In the A-Main, Melvin and Dillow went side-by-side for the first few laps. Melvin then took a big lead as Tony Journey passed Dillow for second. Melvin pulled away to win by a straightaway. Journey was second, Dillow third, Whitley fourth and Cooper fifth.

In the bombers, Conard Newman won the first heat race with Tony Wells second. David Dunn won the second heat race giving him the outside pole. In the A-Main, Dunn and Newman battled for the first few laps in the feature. Newman took a decent size lead and on lap five, Newman pulled off the track with problems. Dunn inerited the lead and was untouchable the rest of the night to get his first feature win at Rocky Top.
