GEORGETOWN, Ky. - After the Cincinnati Bengals had a turnaround season, they quickly locked up coach Marvin Lewis.

Lewis, who lead the Bengals to an 8-8 record last year, signed a new contract shortly after the end of last season, team spokesman Jack Brennan said Monday.

''We were so pleased with how it had gone on and thought he had done an extraordinarily effective job and we wanted to show him that we appreciated what he had done and offered to extend the contract,'' Bengals president Mike Brown said.

Lewis received a new four-year contract which will pay him more than $2 million a season, replacing the four-year deal he signed when he was hired in January 2003, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported on its Web site.

''It was very positive and very gracious and flattering to me, wanting to renegotiate and extend the contract,'' Lewis told the newspaper, although he did not confirm the length or the amount of the new contract.

''(Brown) just felt like that the two of us could make this thing work long term,'' Lewis said.

Lewis, now in his second season with the Bengals, lead the team to its second non-losing record since 1990. The Bengals stayed in playoff contention until the last game.

The 8-8 record was a six-game improvement from 2002, when the team lost a franchise-record 14 games.
