CHESAPEAKE-Although the fly-in at the Lawrence County Airport was officially cancelled due to inclement weather, the Backyard Dixie Jazz Stompers played on and several families attended the event Saturday.
"What should we play now," said the trumpet-player before the band launched into a spirited rendition of "Cakewalk in Vegas."
The event was sponsored by the Tri-State Pilots Association.
"We had a pretty good turnout despite the weather," said Dee Callicoat, the association's president.
"We wanted to show people where their tax money is going."
Jeff Hanichen of Barboursville, W.Va., formerly of Ironton, brought his grandchildren, Abby and Bryce Parker, to the event.
"They were able to look at the planes," Hanichen said. "Abby was asking me why some of the planes were covered."
Abby, 7, said she was disappointed about not getting to ride in a plane, but said she still had fun.
"She's the adventurous type," her grandfather said.
Despite grounded rides, visitors were treated to tours of planes, antique cars, drawings and a model airplane show.
