PORTSMOUTH - The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings have a formula for winning and it cooked up another championship Wednesday.

The Lady Vikings used the stellar pitching of Lori Harmon, along with some solid hitting and defense, to capture the Southern Ohio Conference softball championship with a 7-0 win over the Portsmouth Clay Lady Panthers.

Harmon pitched yet another no-hitter as Symmes Valley improved to 12-3 on the season and 10-1 in the SOC. Harmon struck out 15 and did not issue a walk as she faced just 22 batters.

"That's about what the record has played all year. Our bats contributed up and down the lineup and Harmon had another strong outing," Lady Vikings coach Jeff "Odie" Estep said.

It was the Lady Vikings' second straight SOC title and fourth in the past five seasons. The Lady Vikings have won nine league softball championships overall, all under Estep.

"We have four seniors and it's nice for them to win another conference championship. Hopefully, we'll continue to play well deep into the tournament," Estep said. "We're playing pretty good team ball right now."

Symmes Valley had 10 hits, with Megan Coomes going 2-3 and Cassie Myers 2-4.

The game was scoreless until the third inning when the Lady Vikings took a 2-0 lead.

Myers and Stephanie Burns singled to start the inning. The runners moved up on a fielder's choice and Kayla Bowman was safe on an error as Myers scored. Rebecca Capper also reached on an error to score Burns.

The Lady Vikings put the game away with five runs in the fifth inning.

Burns walked, Harmon tripled her home and then Harmon scored on a passed ball to make it 4-0.

Bowman was safe on an error, stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored when Erin Martin singled. An out later, Jodi Black had a two-run single and Coomes drove home the final run with a base hit.
