Warmer weather typically brings people outdoors to enjoy the sunshine.
It can also bring thieves into your neighborhood for mischief.
Lawrence County Sheriff Tim Sexton said statistics show that the county experiences a rash of break-ins to cars as well as other thefts such as lawn equipment and ATVs during the spring and summer months. He advised people to take steps to secure their property and to report suspected criminal activity.
"Recently in the Union Township area of Chesapeake, several car break-ins did occur where items of potential value, such as CDs car phones and book bags were stolen," Sexton said. "Also, during the overnight hours of April 19, several items were reported stolen from county roads 70 and 71 in Rome Township. One particular family had a truck and ATV stolen."
Sexton said anyone with information about any of these incidents may contact the sheriff's office at 532-3525 or 867-3157.
Sexton offered advice on protecting yourself and your property against theft.
4Install
motion detector lights around the house and any storage buildings. Thieves not only target houses, but also garages and storage sheds.
4Lock all doors when you are away from home.
4Always keep car doors locked and park in well-lit areas. Consider installing a dusk-to-dawn security light near driveways. Never leave any valuables in your vehicles. "A thief will not pass up the opportunity provided them," Sexton said.
4Do not leave your ATV outside and unsecured.
4Install a car alarm.
4If you see suspicious activity, report it to the proper authorities. Helpful information includes a description of the vehicle, license plate number, state of issue and direction of travel.
4Some suspicious activity occurs in broad daylight. "Nationwide, it is estimated that 60 percent of home burglaries occur during daytime," Sexton said.
4Install a home alarm that will emit a loud, audible noise.
4Place gates in your driveway that limit access to your home, particularly if your live in an isolated area.
4Do not leave garage doors open when away from home.
4When away from home for extended periods of time, stop mail and newpaper delivery.
4Consider getting a dog. A dog can be
effective in detering intruders.
4Begin a crime watch. Sexton said his office is willing to help in the development of neighborhood watch groups.
