CHESAPEAKE - Kersten Harris was only supposed to get part-time work. He gave a full-time performance.
Harris, a freshman, threw a no-hitter in his first career start as the Chesapeake Panthers blanked the St. Joseph Flyers 10-0 Thursday in five innings.
Harris struck out 13 of the 15 outs recorded and walked three over five innings.
"He did a good job. That's the first game he's pitched in. He has a good arm," Panthers coach Joe Waugh said. "I was going to throw several kids, but when I realized he had a no-hitter going, I left him in."
Chesapeake is 3-1. Waugh said he was concerned after upsetting rival Fairland the previous day.
"We were coming off an emotional high, so I was pleased we were able to go out and win," Waugh said.
Chesapeake scored its 10 runs on just seven hits, but the Flyers were guilty of walking six and hitting three more batters.
"We gave them too many free passes and free bases. And when you don't hit, it's hard to make up those mistakes," Flyers coach Greg Bryant said.
"We walked six and hit three, and that contributed to our problems. We haven't been able to use the gym because of school activities, so we aren't getting the work we need and that has hurt us."
Chesapeake got a run in the first inning when Tyler Marcum and Justin Finley singled, Jeff Gilkison was hit by a pitch, and Phillip Butcher walked to force home the run. The lead went to 5-0 in the second inning.
Brad Eldred was hit by a pitch, Harris walked, Marcum reached on an error, Benji Pyles walked to drive in Eldred and Matt Whitmore cleared the bases with a double.
Three runs scored in the third inning to make it 8-0.
Eldred walked, Harris hit into a force play, and Pyles doubled for a run. Finley doubled to drive in a run and Gilkson had an RBI single.
The final two runs scored in the fourth inning.
Zach Henderson, Kermit Adkins, and Harris all walked to load the bases. Joey Stallo hit into a force play to drive in a run and Pyles followed with an RBI single.
Pyles and Finley each went 2-3 to lead the Panthers.
