CHESHIRE - With that kind of shooting, even Annie Oakley might get jealous.
The Chesapeake Panthers made nearly 65 percent of their shots as they rolled past the River Valley Raiders 77-51 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
The Panthers connected on 31 of 48 field goal attempts for 64.5 percent including 7 of 10
from behind the arc.
"We shot well, but we came out focused. We have to be focused to play well," Panthers coach Norm Persin said.
With the win, the Panthers are now 10-1 overall and 4-1 in the OVC, one-half game behind Rock Hill. The two teams meet Friday at Chesapeake in a showdown for first place.
Trent Finley led the hot-shooting Panthers with 22 points including four trifectas. Daniel Thompson was next with 14 points followed by P.J. Rase with 11 points and Brennan Hall had 10.
River Valley (2-8, 2-3) was led by Steven Harder with 19 points. Chris Roush added nine.
After playing to a 10-10 early in the first quarter, Chesapeake went on a 6-0 run to take a 16-10 lead.
The Panthers then outscored the Raiders 17-2 over the first six minutes of the second quarter and stormed to a 45-21 halftime cushion.
"We came out of the gate playing well," Persin said. "We played pretty good defense the first half, but we were substituting a lot in the second half and we didn't have the same flow or intensity."
Chesapeake's defense forced the Raiders into 13 first half turnovers to help generate the big lead.
The Panthers led by as many as 30 points in the third quarter including a 65-35 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the reserve game, Chesapeake won 60-24 as Mike Stapleton scored 13 points.
