SOUTH POINT - Win Chesapeake, assist Perry.
With Lisa Perry eclipsing the 500 career assists mark, the Lady Panthers knocked off the South Point Lady Pointers 49-36 Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
Perry finished with 18 points, eight assists, eight steals and five rebounds to lead the Lady Panthers.
Perry now has 503 career assists to go with 750 career points and she is closing in on 300 steals.
"That's quite an accomplishment," Chesapeake coach Chad Belville said. "To give out 500 assists and get 300 steals, that's quite a career. And she was on tonight. It was a highlight show."
Brittany Boyle scored 11 points and Jennifer Rice added 11 points and 10 rebounds as the Lady Panthers improved to 6-4 and 2-0.
"Jennifer Rice played her best game, and everyone did a little something for us. The girls on our bench were vital. They were in the game cheering when they weren't playing. It was a total team effort," Belville said.
Jessi Craft scored 17 points for South Point, 1-8 and 0-2.
Perry hit a pair of 3-pointers as Chesapeake took a 9-8 lead. Latisha Koukos sank a free throw to tie the game for South Point, but Joanna Delimpo's layup gave Chesapeake an 11-9 lead at the end of the quarter.
South Point never led in the game.
Perry hit two more 3-pointers and Rice had a 3-pointer just before the half to put Chesapeake ahead 23-19.
The Chesapeake defense held South Point to one point in the third quarter and built a 34-20 lead. Sara Rucker hit a pair of key baskets that helped the Lady Panthers pull away.
"Defensively we played really well the third quarter," Belville said. "And this is the third game in a row where we've had good balance offensively. We're getting better. The third quarter was the key."
With six minutes left to play, South Point finally scored its second points. Chesapeake led by as many as 18 points in the fourth quarter.
Alisha Bridges nailed a 3-pointer to draw the Lady Pointers within 11 late in the game, but Noelle Wood took a rebound the length of the floor and found Boyle open for a 3-pointer to break the South Point momentum.
The Lady Panthers converted 8 of 14 from the line in the final quarter to seal the win.
In the reserve game, South Point (4-3) won 37-24 as Missy Wheeler scored 11 points and Shannon Warnick had six. Kirk had eight for Chesapeake.
