SOUTH POINT - Coach Dan McDavid reminded his South Point players the season is 10 games, not eight.
McDavid said he emphasized playing for pride as well as a chance to play spoiler as the Pointers host the River Valley Raiders Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
River Valley comes into the game 6-2 overall and 1-2 in the OVC. The Raiders need to win their final two games to qualify for the Division IV playoffs.
South Point is just 2-6 and 1-2, but the Pointers have played every league opponent tough. McDavid expects that trend to continued.
"We've taught the kids all year that what you start you have to finish. We have to hang with it. You're out there to do a job and you have to finish the job," McDavid said.
"We want to finish strong and lay some ground work for next year. We told the seniors, when you build a program it's like building a house. You have to have a strong foundation and we want them to be the foundation."
In order to build the foundation, the Pointers will have to contend with the Raiders Joey Graham, who splits time between
running back and quarterback, and running backs Riley Rice and Josh Wamsley.
"They're a pretty good ball club. Graham's a pretty good kid. They run him, then stick him at quarterback. He's their home run hitter. And they have two pretty good backs to go with Graham," McDavid said.
"They've won six games, so they're doing things right. Coach (Gregg) Deel is doing a good job."
South Point won't be a pushover. The Pointers have trailed by a touchdown or less heading into the fourth quarter in all but one loss this season.
The Pointers lost 18-10 to Chesapeake and 28-14 to Rock Hill. River Valley lost 14-0 to Rock Hill last week and fell 43-0 to Chesapeake in their first OVC game.
The Raiders opened the season 5-0 for the first time in the school's 11-year history.
"We have to play well. They have a good defense. Defensively, we have to key on Graham. Offensively, we have to win the turnover battle. We want to be on the positive side of the turnovers numbers. That's a key," McDavid said.
Kickoff is schedule for 7:30 p.m.
