COAL GROVE - What a way to end a season.
The Coal Grove Junior Hornets finished the football season with a thrilling 18-12 overtime win over the Rock Hill Junior Redmen in an Ohio Valley Conference Middle School game Thursday.
Rock Hill opened the scoring on a 59-yard run up the middle by Shane Bostic and it was 6-0.
Coal Grove's first drive stalled at the Rock Hill 23, and two plays later Rock Hill's Brandon Porter electrified the crowd by reversing his field and breaking four tackles en route to a 77-yard touchdown run.
The conversion failed and the Redmen led 12-0.
The Hornets answered with a 65-yard drive that carried over into the second quarter and end on a 3-yard run by B.J. Harbolt. The conversion failed but Coal Grove had cut the deficit in half at 12-6.
The score remained the same until the fourth quarter. With less than six minutes to play in regulation, the Hornets defense held on downs at its own 36.
Coal Grove then used all but four seconds of the remaining time to drive for the tying touchdown as Matt Cooper ran into the end zone from 1 yard out.
Zach Murphy threw a pair of 13-yard passes to Daniel Kelly and Michael Lewis to highlight the drive. However, the conversion kick failed and the game went into overtime.
Behind the blocking of the offensive line, the Hornets scored on the first possession of the overtime as Cooper ran 3 yards untouched to make it 18-12. The conversion attempt failed.
It was Rock Hill's turn and the Redmen were faced with a fourth down at the 5-yard line. But Chris Brammer and Murphy combined to make the stop on a counter play, thus ending the game and season for the Hornets.
Coal Grove racked up 188 rushing yards as Cooper had 126 yards on the ground. Murphy completed 3-of-5 for 33 yards. Lewis had eight tackles and Kelly recovered a fumble to lead the defensive effort.
Rock Hill, 2-4, amassed 219 total yards despite running just 21 plays to the Hornets 52.
Coal Grove finishes the season 5-2.
