CHESAPEAKE - As long as Mother Nature is kind enough to provide the blue skies, local airplane pilots want the community to come out for "Just Plane Fun" at the Cruise-in/Fly-in Saturday.
For the third year in a row, the Tri-State Pilots' Association is sponsoring
Saturday's free event at the Lawrence County Airpark from 7 a.m. until dark.
Attractions include a radio-controlled plane exhibition, mini-NASCAR remote controlled car races, an airplane show and rides, powered parachute rides, a skydiving exhibition, a hot rod, show car and motorcycle shows and antique aircraft shows.
Pilot Nelson Whitt said he expects it to be a good event with something for everyone, especially if the weather cooperates.
"It is going to be family fun," he said. "We have a lot of things for the kids."
All the exhibitions are free. Airplane rides cost $20 per person. The NASCAR races cost $3 for an 18-lap race.
Bruce Sprouse, event coordinator, said that it should be a fun event that will not break visitors' pocketbooks.
"It is a good fun afternoon for everyone," he said. "It is fun and affordable."
The pilots also want to invite people to join them for an all-you-can-eat breakfast that will be served from 7 to 10 a.m. for $5.
Hot dogs and other refreshments will be sold beginning at 10 a.m. Visitors are encouraged to bring their picnic baskets as well, Whitt said.
Last year's event saw a good turnout despite some scattered showers throughout the day. Organizers hope the weather will cooperate more this year, even though spring has saturated the Tri-State with rain in May and June.
The Lawrence County Airpark is located on County Road 1, 3/4 mile from the intersection at U.S. Route 52 and K-Mart. If it rains, the event will be rescheduled for Sunday.
