April is Fair Housing month in Lawrence County.

Elaine Payne, Fair Housing Coordinator for Lawrence County and for the city of Ironton, said the purpose of the annual recognition is to educate people on the recourse available to them should they suspect they are the victim of housing discrimination

"It's important that people recognize that fair housing is the law," Payne said. "They do have an agency they can turn to if they have a complaint or have been discriminated against."

Federal law prohibits housing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, familial or disability status.
