Lost pennies to help animals in need

The Lawrence County Humane Society has $135 to care for local dogs and cats in need, thanks to patrons at the Briggs-Lawrence County Public Library.

Librarian Assistant Susan Montgomery said the library sat out huge collection jars during the month of February, and asked patrons to donate their "lost pennies" to

help the humane society. "Lost penny day" is meant to encourage people to turn in the pennies they may be hoarding in jars at home, and get these coins back in circulation.

"We've never done a 'lost penny day' before," Montgomery said. "We tied it in with Lincoln's birthday."

Human Society treasurer Alberta Wise said she hopes the money can be used to spay one female cat and one female dog. Wise said the kindness of the library patrons will help her organization to continue its service to the community.

"We're totally non-profit. We get no government funds at all," Wise said. "We work solely on donations."

Montgomery said late last year, patrons donated pet food, toys and other necessities to the humane society in exchange for the library "forgiving" overdue book fines.
